Researchers noted measurable improvement in visual-perceptual processing, postural control, and functional mobility after 11 training sessions over a four-week period using the popular digital gaming system. The 13 year-old continued his normal physical therapy during the sessions.

It’s a Wonderful Life

To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first published report on using the Wii for rehabilitation, though there have been numerous press reports about use of the Wii in clinical settings as well as some scientific articles on the physiological effects of using the Wii.

The report underscores how important it is that victims of cerebral palsy get access to the resources they need to lead a normal life. Families struggling with the impact of this birth defect might find help from an experienced cerebral palsy attorney. Experienced cerebral palsy attorneys have access to many of the resources parents need to cope with this condition and can lend professional insight.

Friends, parents contribute to growth of cord blood banking

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

A California company that banks an infant’s umbilical cord blood has recorded a record number of enrollments and contributes its growth, in part, to people other than the child’s parents.

Umbilical cord blood contains stem cells. A person’s own stem cells — as opposed to just any adult stem cells —  seems to offer a powerful tool for medical advances in degenerative diseases like cerebral palsy and other conditions that have no cure today.

Many cord blood banking registries have programs designed to help expectant parents manage the expense — as much as $1,200 up front and $100-$250 per year — and these programs are seeing tremendous growth. Indeed, the cost for as many as half of all families have a third party pay for part or all of the fees.

These third parties might be grandparents-to-be or other relatives, friends or co-workers who contribute to blood cord banking as a gift.
