Dental hygiene becomes very important when you are expecting a child. During pregnancy, a woman’s gums swell along with the rest of her body. While swollen gums can be pretty painful, they can also pose a health risk to the unborn child.

Pregnancy hormones combine with plaque at the gum line, causing gum inflammation. Additionally, about 50 percent of pregnant women experience pregnancy gingivitis. Researchers have found that women who suffer from gum disease during pregnancy are more likely to give birth prematurely or to children with low birth weight. Both of these increase a baby’s chance of developing serious health problems such as cerebral palsy, blindness, and deafness.

To be safe, pregnant women should remove as much bacteria from their teeth as possible through brushing and flossing to prevent the bacteria from transferring to the fetus. Women who are attempting to get pregnant should consult a dentist, and get their teeth professionally cleaned every 3 months when they are expecting.

In most cases, birth defects and genetic diseases can be identified early in a pregnancy to allow the parents an opportunity to decide whether or not they wish to continue the pregnancy or terminate the pregnancy through abortion. In some states, if a birth defect or genetic disorder is NOT detected during pregnancy because of the medical professional’s negligence, then a wrongful birth claim can be made.

Prenatal screenings are commonly offered in the United States to patients, regardless of the patient’s age or medical history. Blood tests during pregnancy can detect certain genetic disorders, depending on whether or not either of the parents are at an increased risk of being a carrier. Diseases included are: sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, canavans disease, Tay-Sachs disease, and thallasemias. Down syndrome can be detected by an ultrasound examination that measures the clear space at the back of the neck. This ultrasound in combination with a blood test from the mother can determine if further testing is necessary.

If your doctor missed important clues during your pregnancy, seek professional insight. Birth defect attorneys can guide you toward helpful resources and assist you with the proper legal response.

Umbilical cord blood may repair birth defects

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Young Guns II rip download The 81st Annual Academy Awards Stem cells from umbilical cord blood may provide the raw material to help thousands of babies born each year with birth defects like defective heart valves.

Chaos trailer This, according to data presented at a recent American Heart Association meeting.

Problems with the heart’s structure that are present at birth, or congenital heart defects, are the most common type of major birth defect. In children with the defect, the valves do not fully open or close and impede the flow of blood. While children can receive transplants from donors or artificial material, these valves will not grow as children do and require repeated operations to receive larger valves. In theory, replacement heart valves that are made from the child’s own cord blood stem cells would grow with the child and change shape as needed.

Researchers plan to begin experiments next year to test their procedures involving the cord blood stem cells in animals, and cardiologists say they are about five years away from giving children with heart defects valve transplants made from the child’s own cord blood.

Scott is being placed in this capsule, a hyperbaric chamber, because his parents believe it will help the effects of his cerebral palsy and other disabilities. The hyperbaric chamber is not in a hospital; in fact, Scott’s mother and Craig Meier bought the chamber to help him. They also let others use the machine through their business Hope Clinic—for a fee.

Hope Clinic is one of around 300 hyperbaric chamber businesses that exist around the country, and they offer treatment for conditions from autism to Alzheimer’s. They believe that breathing in highly pressurized oxygen will spark injured neurons, even though there is no science to prove it. For this reason, insurers will not cover non-medically proven uses for hyperbaric chambers in hospitals. Approved uses include treating pressure sickness in divers, certain burns and wounds, bone infections, and carbon monoxide poisoning.

While there is no medical evidence that these machines help those with cerebral palsy, Eugene says it has helped her son. After spending an hour in the chamber for the first time, one of Scott’s arms that usually had muscle spasms and was drawn close to his body was dangling by his side. Throughout his treatments, Michele found more changes. "In school, they clocked him, and he could sit and pay attention for up to 45 minutes," she said. "This was a kid whose attention span had been that of a flea."
