On St. Estatuis, a remote island in the Caribbean, there is only one: 4-year-old Christopher Simmons. Simmons was born four months premature, and spend three months in the hospital after his birth. For four years, he was the only person on the island with cerebral palsy.

However, Simmons’ mother heard about a new student at the local university who also had the disorder. Simmons’ mother found Tyler Sexton, the student, and brought him to see her son. "He was in a wheelchair that didn’t fit," Tyler Sexton recalled. "He had tools that were not adequate."

Sexton decided to try to help Simmons. After a summer break, he returned to the island with a custom-made wheelchair for Simmons, thanks to the Shriners Hospital for Children, where he used to work. The hospital also agreed to help the young boy if they could get him to the United States. Sexton invited 500 guests to a gala at St. Estatuis and raised enough money to pay for two trips to Tampa for Simmons and his mother. Simmons underwent surgery at Shriners in October that enabled him to walk short distances. Doctors say he has made significant progress and is currently working toward several other therapy goals.

Sexton is studying to be a pediatrician. He says having hope helps him succeed. "I’ve been told I’d be blind, mentally and physical disabled, I would never walk myself, and here we are," Sexton said."We’re here. And that’s what’s important."

Fetal heart defects linked to use of Paxil, Prozac

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

An international group of researchers recently published a study linking pregnant women who take the antidepressant Prozac or Paxil to heart defects in their unborn children. The study, a collaboration from scientists from Israel, Italy and Germany, was published in the November issue of The British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.

The study found that women who take Prozac during pregnancy are more than four times as likely to give birth to a child with heart defects; for Paxil, the incidence of birth defects was more than three times as likely.

The risk of fetal heart defects is raised again if the mother also smoked while taking the antidepressants. The highest risk group was women taking Prozac while smoking more than ten cigarettes a day, yielding 5.4 times as many children with heart problems.

Researchers recommend that pregnant smokers who are on one of these two drugs stop smoking. They also urge that patients talk to their doctor before deciding to cease medication.
