Folic acid can reduce brith defects, cerebral palsy

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

A new study confirms that taking folic acid makes a woman 70 percent less likely to have a baby with a birth defect like cerebral palsy.

Folic acid is the synthetic form of the vitamin folate and women should begin taking it at least three to six months before conception.

And, since about half of all pregnancies are unplanned, regular consumption of the vitamin — even for those not intending to have a baby — is more critical, according to health officials.

Folic acid, a B vitamin, can help prevent spinal and brain birth defects, such as spina bifida and anencephaly as well as other defects not related to birth trauma.

Health officials recommend that women take a folic acid supplement daily to ensure they are getting the recommended 400 micrograms a day.

Many foods naturally contain folate, and all enriched cereals and grain products in the United State are fortified with folic acid. However, only one-third of U.S. women get the recommended amount.

Lack of oxygen can cause birth defects

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

.!.

Injury can occur if newborns are deprived of oxygen before, during, or after birth.

No Man’s Land buy

A lack of oxygen can lead to birth defect and brain damage or a condition known as cerebral palsy. If your baby suffered injuries at birth due to the deprivation of oxygen, you may have a claim against your doctor or the hospital staff.

These injuries are difficult to diagnose and most doctors are reluctant to admit, to the family, that these problems exist. If your child has not met typical developmental milestones, you should turn to an experienced cerebral palsy lawyer for professional insight. A good attorney, like the Texas firm of Cappolino, Dodd, Krebs LLP, can help you find the resources to meet the challenges of raising a child with disabilities.

Birth defects tied to over-weight mothers

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Women who are overweight or obese have higher odds of having complications during pregnancy. Those complications could include hypertension (high blood pressure), preeclampsia and eclampsia or gestational diabetes. Each of these conditions may require medication and treatment and put the health of not only mothers, but their babies at risk.

The increased risks to babies include being obese in childhood, being born prematurely or having certain birth defects or birth trauma including neural tube birth defects like spina bifida.

Managing weight is never easy and the many changes that come along with pregnancy can make it even tougher.

The best way to reduce risks is to achieve a healthy weight before becoming pregnant. During pregnancy, women who are in a normal weight range need only 300 additional calories daily to support a baby’s growth. Women who are obese may need less and women who are underweight or adolescents will need more. Those calories can be supplied by a simple snack such as one of these:
