This innovation greatly improved the life of young Cassie Merrill. At six months old, Cassie was unable to sit up or walk. Unlike most children, Cassie continued to travel around her home via army crawl until she finally took her first steps when she was 3 years old. Finally, when Cassie was 7 years old, she was diagnosed with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.

Under a doctor’s supervision, Cassie was treated with Botox injections into her legs to loosen her rigid muscles. The injections allowed Cassie to walk around on her own when combined with physical therapy and leg braces. Better yet, the Botox treatment helped Cassie bide her time until she was able to receive a new experimental surgical procedure where several nerves running through the spinal cord are cut to alleviate muscle spasms. Today, Cassie’s future looks bright.

Starting this month, Utah will be launching a new birth certificate that asks mothers more specific questions relating to the birth of their child.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the data collected from interviews with the mother and a review of medial records will be used to track information about the mothers’ actions and birth defects in their children. Utah’s current questionnaire was adopted in 1989 and contains outdated questions and responses; for example, there is no way to note if the mother is multiracial. In fact, the only options for race are American Indian, black, white, Japanese, or "etc."

The new survey was created in 2003 by the National Center for Health Statistics, and leaves out some of the information Utah collects today, such as if a baby has fetal alcohol syndrome and about the mother’s alcohol use during pregnancy. Women will still be asked about their cigarette use.

Early elective labor induction and voluntary Caesarean sections have been linked to the rise in the premature birth rate. Babies born even just a few weeks early are at risk for several serious birth defects, including respiratory and feeding problems, jaundice, long-term mental disabilities, and sudden death.

A recent study lead by Dr. Lewis Holmes of the Massachusetts General Hospital concludes that the test, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), increases the rate of hemangiomas, birth defects caused by the abnormal growth of blood vessels, and other vascular limb defects.

CVS is usually performed in the first trimester. It has been regarded as a relatively safe procedure during which a small section of the placenta is removed and tested for serious genetic diseases such as Down syndrome. However, Holmes’ study found that the rate of a defect affecting two fingers increased from 1 in 54,000 to 1 in 3,000 in infants who had undergone CVS.

Though CVS has its problems, it is possible that the benefits of knowing early may outweigh the risks, especially for women in high-risk pregnancies.
