Toxic waste dump blamed for birth defects
Joy Shatford gave birth to her first son, Daniel, in 1997. When Mrs. Shatford unwrapped her newborn son, she discovered that he had been born with no fingers on his left hand.

Mrs. Shatford is not alone. Eighteen families in the UK are trying to secure a multimillion-pound suit for birth defects, which they claim were caused by mismanagement of toxic waste dumps. These mothers allege that during their pregnancies in the 1980s and 1990s they were exposed to contamination from waste sites left over from the clean up of a former steel industry based in Corby.

While toxicology and medical experts have said that the rate of upper and lower-limb abnormality in Corby is 10 times higher than the national average, Corby Borough Council denies any responsibility and has already spent £1 million on lawyers and a public relations to defend the allegations.
