Treatment helps kids with Cerebral Palsy walk

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

As 11-year-old Minty Hoyer Millar took her first steps, her mother, Pip, could hardly contain her excitement; after all, the doctors said Minty’s cerebral palsy would prevent her from ever taking a single step.

It had not been an easy journey. Pip, who refused to give up on her daughter, traveled hundreds of miles in search of treatment.

“Minty was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was 22 months old and I was told we’d have to wait at least a year to see a physiotherapist,” Pip said. “I immediately started researching the condition and looking into what help was available privately.”

Pip found help with the Footsteps program. Originally from Poland, Footsteps uses a piece of equipment called the Spider to help the suffering childrens’ development. This specialized equipment (a frame with bungee ropes attached), holds the children in place while physiotherapists work on improving their strength, posture, and muscle tone.

The Footsteps center is the only one of it’s kind in the UK, and it welcomes families from all over Europe. Families currently do their own fund-raising to pay for the treatment, which costs £1,800 for a three-week course, but a charity has recently been set up which will allow more families to bring their children to the center.

Stem cell therapy for cerebral palsy is improving

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

A three-year-old toddler with cerebral palsy has improved so much that he has been able to drink out of a cup unassisted for the first time…all as a result of experimental stem cell therapy in China.

Corey de Gregorio was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at eight months old. His parents, Mark and Rosanne, were determined to help their son. They took Corey to Qingdao, where he had six cord blood stem cell treatments during his five-week stay last year. More than six months after his treatments, Corey has had astounding improvements in his torso and left arm.

Grind download Jackson DePoy, a young man with cerebral palsy, is a special in more than one way.

He was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at a young age, but with his family’s help has greatly helped special needs people around the Mooresville, Indiana area.

Jackson’s mother, Lara, described Jackson by saying, “He’s a vibrant, energetic, just full-of-spunk kid.”  When she learned of his illness, she started researching Cerebral Palsy.  She found something called conductive therapy.  There was one problem though, there were no centers that offered it in Indiana.

Lara said, “The closest center was in Chicago.  When Jackson was three and a half, we took him to Chicago to take part in the program there.  And in five weeks he was doing things that they said he may never be able to do.”

Agi Maulik, the conductor of the program, stated, “By using the ring and driving the bus, we would like them to learn how to stretch their arms so that when they go home they will be able to reach things because for them it’s not easy to stretch the arms.”

There have been numerous remarkable achievements thanks to the therapy.  One parent said, “The doctors were unsure if Cole was going to be able to walk and do a lot of things.  And I give the Jackson Center credit for his success and he’s walking now, he’s practically running now.”

The Jackson Center has mainly focused of kids, but will provide education for adults.  “We’ll have people that have suffered from a stroke, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease,” said Lara referring to the adult education program.

Jackson has helped build a program that will benefit not only children like himself, but also adults who need help too.
