The United Steelworkers union and local health groups are calling for a state investigation as a result of a report suggesting a rise in birth defects and chronic diseases in Joplin, Missouri. The report was complied by the union, and state health department officials said the agency knew about many of the issues, but further analysis is required.

According to the report, "Joplin is afflicted by a significantly higher rate of a whole host of different kinds of birth defects." They include ones involving the central nervous system, heart, other circulatory and respiratory anomalies, genital organs and urinary organs, and these defects have been trending upward for Joplin since 1999.

The union’s report noted that Joplin has a long history of lead mining and smelting and, with that, a legacy of soil and water pollution. Lead causes a wide range of diseases and birth defects as do other contaminants from lead smelting, according to the report. The union began looking at the state’s health data on the city after plant workers grew concerned about health issues. 250 workers at the Eagle-Picher Technologies battery plant are members of the union.

Babies conceived during the summer months have an elevated risk of birth defects, a new study shows.

During the months of April through July, surface water contains elevated levels of certain chemicals and pesticides, and babies conceived during these months have an increased risk of birth defects.

While birth defects have been linked to the pesticides found in surface water, this is the first study to link this seasonal concentration with the peak of birth defects of babies conceived in the same months.

Further, the correlation between the month of last menstrual activity and higher concentrations of chemicals in surface water was statistically significant for more than half of the 22 categories of birth defects recorded by the Centers for Disease Control database from 1996 to 2002.

download Synecdoche, New York dvd According to one of the study’s authors, "While our study didn’t prove a cause and effect link, the fact that birth defects and pesticides in surface water peak during the same four months makes us suspect that the two are related."

Birth defects are known to be associated with risk factors such as alcohol, smoking, diabetes or advanced age. However, the researchers found that even mothers who didn’t report these risk factors had higher overall birth defect rates for babies conceived from April to July.
