When Jude Countryman was being born, his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and damaged nerves that controlled his mouth and tongue. He has a hard time eating and talking. However, he has shown significant improvement since he started using a device developed for stroke victims called VitalStim.
Much like victims of cerebral palsy, stroke victims often have trouble with muscle coordination. The VitalStim device uses electrodes that are attached to the patient’s face three times a week for about an hour. The electrodes send tiny electrical currents through the facial muscles to strengthen them. After using VitalStim for a while, Jude was able to move his upper lip during speech. This was a huge improvement.
VitalStim is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use on infants and children.
