Children born with smaller-than-normal head size should be screened for cognitive problems such as cerebral palsy, new guidelines suggest.

The condition is known as microcephaly and affects more than 25,000 newborns in the United States each year.

Microcephaly is not a problem by itself but children born with the condition are at greater risk of developmental delays mental retardation and cerebral palsy.

According to the report, 40 percent of children with microcephaly also have epilepsy and 20 percent have cerebral palsy. Therefore, these children should be screened aggressively.
