Study Finds Chemical was Linked to Birth Defects

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

A study has been published in Environmental Health that links exposure to tetrachloroethylene to birth defects.  The chemical is also known as perchlorethylene (PCE)and is used as a solvent in drinking water occasionally.

The study looked at eight towns in the Cape Cod Massachusetts area from 1969 to 1983.  The water pipes in that area were coated with a vinyl that contained the PCE.  The study found an increased risk of oral clefts and neural tube defects in children.  There were 1,658 children born in that span; 61 had congenital anomalies.

Ann Aschengrau is a study researcher from the Boston University School of Public Health.  She said, “The results suggest that the risk of certain congenital anomalies is increased among the offspring of women who were exposed to PCE-contaminated drinking water around the time of conception.”

Time is vital with cesarean sections and cerebral palsy

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Cerebral palsy, one of the most common injuries that can happen to a baby during birth, occurs when the oxygen supply to the baby’s brain becomes limited.

In causing extensive damage to the baby’s cerebrum (the part of the brain responsible for memory and motor and sensory function), the child will have a hard time controlling movements and potentially have limited mental capacity.

While more and more women are opting to deliver through C-sections, hesitation by doctors can result in birth injuries and fatalities. During emergency cases, the doctor needs to immediately decide to have a cesarean section to prevent further fetal distress and other potential problems.

If a doctor delays in ordering a cesarean section and this hesitation results in injuries or fatalities, the doctor can be held liable for it.

The doctor can also be held liable for failing to diagnose the problem, and you can file a lawsuit against the doctor for lack of proper judgment during an emergency situation.

Use of certain antidepressants during the first three months of pregnancy may cause a slightly increased risk of giving birth to babies with heart defects. The 4th Tenor video Sweet and Lowdown dvdrip

Danish researchers found that septal heart defects, or malformations in the wall separating the right side of the heart from the left, were more common in women taking antidepressants in their first trimester. While some of these heart defects resolve on their own, others require surgery.

The risks were seen in a class of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), such as sertraline (Zoloft and Lustral) and citalopram (Celexa). Women who took more than one SSRI early in their pregnancy had a risk four times higher than those who didn’t. However, this risk is relatively low: 246 women would have to take such medication in order to see one septal heart defect, and 62 mothers would have to take more than one SSRI to see a problem in one child.

Many experts agree that the absolute risk is low, and this must be balanced against the potential substantial risk of under- or untreated depression during pregnancy.

"The concern with pregnant women with depression, if you take them off their medication, they can have a relapse into severe depression and this could lead to self-destructive behaviors," said Jennifer Wu, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

Previous studies have found that pregnant women who stopped taking their antidepressant medications were five times more likely to relapse than women who continued with the medication.

At 18 months, Dallas could not crawl, sit up, clap or speak. But within five days of his infusion last Jula, the child who had not been able to communicate was able to say “Mama,” and he is able to walk unassisted.
