Rural New York Obstetricians Becoming Hard to Find

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

New York obstetricians are becoming rare in many of the rural counties. It is getting difficult for mothers to find nearby practicing obstetricians to help them through the birthing process.

Eight New York counties do not have a practicing obstetrician and 18 counties have less than 5 practicing obstetricians. Due to the lack of obstetricians, women are being faced with having to travel long distances in order to see a specialist. This can be very dangerous for women with high risk pregnancies.

Many feel that the declining number of obstetricians in New York is due to rising medical malpractice premiums. Because of the rising insurance premiums, many obstetricians can no longer afford to practice in New York State.

The eight New York counties without a practicing obstetrician are: Yates, Greene, Hamilton, Seneca, Essex, Washington, Tioga, and Schoharie.

Birth injury attorneys are working on cases in which the lack of proper medical care has caused serious and life-long disability through birth trauma.

Cesarean Section Rates Continue to Rise While Infant Mortality Rates Show Minimal Improvement

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Rates for Cesarean deliveries continue to rise nationwide as the procedure is being used by obstetricians in an attempt to ward off high medical malpractice insurance premiums.

Although Cesarean sections were once considered a last resort, only performed if the birth may result in serious complications, such as birth trauma, hospitals and insurance companies are now requiring them in many cases.

Despite the consistent rise in Cesarean sections, infant mortality has only dropped from 7.57 (per 1000 births) to 6.78 (per 1000 births). This is in contrast to the 30 percent increase in Cesarean sections in 2005 reported by the Centers for Disease Control.

Physicians are divided when it comes to Cesarean sections. There is literature to both support and question the reliability of Cesareans that are completed without medical indications.

The delay of a necessary Cesarean may result in serious birth trauma to the baby and injuries to the mother. In addition, an unnecessary Cesarean may also result in serious injuries to both the baby and mother. Birth injury attorneys are working to prevent the devastating consequences of medical negligence that can result in life-long disability, or fatality.

New Treatment Developed for Cerebral Palsy

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

A new treatment regime has been developed by Snowdrop Child Development to help treat children with cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities. The new regime is called neuro-cognitive therapy and it involves several hours of at home therapy a day.

The principles behind the new therapy involve the idea that children will be in an environment with appropriate sensory perception. Additionally, information is presented to the child in the level and speed that is best for them to learn.

Cerebral palsy is a developmental disability that is attributed to birth trauma. The disorder develops due to severe damage to the area of the brain which controls movement.

Various treatment options for cerebral palsy are available and should be researched with the assistance of a physician. Cerebral palsy attorneys are working to prevent and limit the occurrence of the disability by pursuing claims of birth trauma. Birth trauma attorneys believe that negligent medical staff and hospitals should be held responsible for the consequences of birth injuries.
