According to an article in the San Jose Mercury News, last week California insurance regulators ordered three of the state’s largest insurers to submit to an independent review of policy cancellations to identify people whose coverage had been wrongly canceled. A partial review of cancellations resulted in the reinstatement of 26 policies. The order, made by the Department of Managed Health Care, applies to Kaiser Permanente, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California.

Health Insurance Carrier Drops Cancer Patient

Monday, March 31st, 2008
It is very sad how you may invest such a large portion of your hard earned income for insurance coverage, and when you need it, you get dropped. It must have been very scary for a California hairdresser to be diagnosed with cancer. As if that wasn’t bad enough, imagine starting cancer treatment, then having your health insurance policy canceled. According to a recent story on ABC news, (http://abcnews.go.com/WN/story?id=3846673&page=1) the insurance carrier “set goals for its employees to cancel policies, and the carrier paid more than $20,000 in bonuses to its senior cancellation specialist. “  The article further indicates court documents show that over six years the carrier canceled 1,600 policies, avoiding at least $35.5 million in medical expenses. It is terrifying to think that insurance companies would  drop people when they need the coverage the most, and worse yet, give major bonuses to employees for canceling policies, especially at a time when treatment is critical and a life depends on it. This demonstrates that insurance companies care more about your money than taking care of you.

Obesity During Pregnancy May Contribute to Birth Trauma

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Obesity during pregnancy may be a contributing factor to birth trauma and birth defects, such as spina bifida.

Many consider it normal for women to gain excess weight during pregnancy. It is assumed that women should eat more and rest. This can lead to excess weight gain, much more than what is healthy during pregnancy.

Pregnant women should only increase their calorie intake by 100 to 300 extra calories.

Obesity during pregnancy can contribute to other serious ailments, such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes or caesarean section. Babies of obese mothers may suffer from jaundice, hypoglycemia or respiratory distress syndrome.

Birth defects may consist of spina bifida, heart defects, anorectal atresia and birth trauma. Birth trauma can lead to brain damage, cerebral palsy, erb’s palsy or shoulder dystocia.

It is imperative to follow a doctor’s direction regarding weight. In turn, it is imperative for doctors to monitor and encourage the proper weight for pregnant mothers.
