Operating Room Fire Burns Woman’s Face

What was supposed to be a routine outpatient surgery for a Florida woman became a nightmare when a flash fire burned her face and neck.

29-year-old Kim Grice was going through surgery to remove some growths from her head, surgery that should have been routine and uneventful. Grice’s mother, Ann, was waiting in the hospital lobby for her daughter to when emergency crews and the fire department showed up.

The explanation by hospital staff that her daughter’s face had caught fire was not comforting to Ann.

“I am in shock,” Ann said. “This is not what happens with routine outpatient surgery.”

Operating room fires are not as rare as one would think. According to experts, at least 650 fires happen in operating rooms around the country each year. It is enough of a problem that the FDA is stepping in to increase safety awareness.

Launching a new initiative, the government organization has convened a special workshop to prevent fires from every happening, and looking to give medical personnel the tools necessary to deal with them if they do occur.

Mistakes happen in any profession, but when they occur in the medical community, it can be especially worrisome.

Study Examines Effects of Epilepsy Medications on Pregnant Women

According to MSNBC, women with epilepsy face a difficult decision when they decide to have children, as they either must their medicine to prevent a seizure or they risk hurting the fetus. A new study from researches at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that children of mothers receiving polytherapy – a combination of epilepsy drugs – had 3 times greater odds of not finishing school.

The study examined 1,235 children born to mothers with epilepsy between 1973 and 1986. Children of mothers who were only taking a single medication did not seem to be as effected and were able to complete school just like their peers, although they were less likely to pass classes with excellence.

Doctors not involved with the study claim it is important for mothers to know that they are able to have normal kids. Childbearing is an important consideration for women with epilepsy, as drugs may have an effect on fetus development. Besides drugs, seizure can injure the fetus, and a woman with epilepsy cannot be off medication completely.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures that may be brief muscle jerks or severe and prolonged convulsions. Anticonvulsant drugs are most commonly prescribed to treat epilepsy, with about 20 drugs available on the market right now. Most anticonvulsant drugs have side effects such as dizziness and fatigue, but some carry a higher risk of suicidal acts.

A different study found that women with epilepsy may have an increased risk of infertility due to taking multiple anti-seizure medications.

A Texas newspaper is reporting that it is dangerous — often fatal — for infants to sleep in the same bed with others.

According to a story published in The Dallas Morning News, state statistics show that more than 160 Texas infants die each year while sleeping in bed with family members.

Deaths of babies in shared beds are a persistent problem rooted in cultural beliefs about the bonding and health benefits of such an arrangement, pediatricians and law enforcement personnel say. They say that covers and pillows can make for a difficylt environment for babies.

However, breast-feeding advocates and some researchers say Texas’ warnings are paternalistic and overly broad.

There were 167 deaths from accidental suffocation or strangulation, or without a clear explanation, while babies shared beds during the budget year that ended on Aug. 31, according to Child Protective Services and the Department of State Health Services. In the previous state fiscal year, there were 165. There were 20 such deaths in October, 2009.

CPS officials say they became alarmed about bed-sharing deaths a couple of years ago and began manually reviewing the agency’s internal case files to learn how many there might be.

The Man Who Wasn’t There A story published by the Associated Press today reveals that about a million Maclaren strollers sold by Target and Babies "R” Us were recalled Monday, after 12 reports of children having their fingertips amputated by a hinge mechanism.

The recall includes all nine models of single and double umbrella Maclaren strollers, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the recall after an investigation.

The amputation risk occurs when a child’s finger is placed in the hinge mechanism of a stroller while it is being unfolded. When the opened stroller locks into place, it can cut off the tip of the child’s finger.

The recall includes the following stroller models: Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller. They have been sold at Babies "R” Us, Target and other stores around the country since 1999. Prices for the strollers ranged from $100 to $360.

The company is offering free hinge covers to prevent future incidents. The covers should not be removed unless the stroller is being cleaned, according to the CPSC.

First Child Death in Maryland from H1N1 Virus

Three children died from the seasonal flu in Maryland last year. The first child death from the H1N1 virus has recently occurred in the state. The H1N1 virus, better known as the swine flu, has rapidly increased, but that is not the biggest concern of Maryland citizens.

Instead, the biggest concern is that children are more susceptible to the flu than adults since many experts agree that adults have been exposed to the virus previously.

Officials have not released any information about the deceased child. It is known that the child had an underlying health problem. Of the 49 children have died nationally from the flu, the majority of them having underlying health problems according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Frances Phillips is Marlyand’s deputy secretary for public health services and said, “This is a tragic occurrence and it is one that other states have experienced with this H1N1 virus. Because of the way the H1N1 virus disproportionally affects children, tragically, some children—even healthy children—can become ill very quickly.”

The study will follow up to 100,000 children from their first trimester before birth until they are at least 21. The study will track this cohort’s exposure to many environmental factors in an effort to learn more about the effects of pollution on American children.

Pregnant women who are invited to take part in the study will be asked to commit themselves and their children to 38 hours of examinations in the first two years. After that, only the children will be examined every three years.

The study will begin with selected pregnant women in Queens, N.Y. and Duplin County, N.C. After 18 months, the trial will expand nationwide to include more than 100 diverse locations.

At the age of three, Carla Pease was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

According to Minot Daily News from Minot, North Dakota, her experiences with the nurses who took care of her made her want to become a nurse herself.

"I was never one of those kids that said I wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer. I always knew I wanted to be a nurse," said Pease. "When I was three, I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and I spent a lot of time in the hospital having surgeries. The nurses were the ones who took care of me. I knew I wouldn’t be happy being anything other than a nurse."

In addition to her cerebral palsy, Pease developed a condition called reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) when she was 16. RSD attacks the nervous system after a surgery or some type of trauma.

Pease finished her LPN degree through the Dakota Nursing Program in July 2008, and she’ll finish her RN program this May. She hopes to get her masters in nursing, and she credits the help of the Dakota Nursing Program and the students in it for her success.

"Everybody in the Dakota Nursing Program was really wonderful. They didn’t wait to see me struggle with something. They always offered me help if I needed it. They never treated me any differently with my cerebral palsy. They never gave me the easy patient to take care of or anything. I never felt like I was a second-class nursing student because of my cerebral palsy," Pease said.

Despite overcoming drastic odds, Pease still has to be careful, but she is optimistic. "It has been brought to my attention that physically, nursing isn’t the best career for me to go into, but I would rather have 10 seconds of something meaningful than a lifetime of doing nothing special."
