Doctor’s Haste Leaves Girl’s Arm Paralyzed

Friday, December 9th, 2011

A Douglas County, Nebraska jury determined that an obstetrician with Mid-City OB-GYN of Omaha was responsible for a birth injury that left a little girl without the use of her left arm. The jury awarded the now 3-year-old Chaylee Bentzinger-Hill $1.8 million for the ripped and ruptured nerves that occurred during her June 2008 delivery.

According to Joe Cullan, the attorney for Chaylee’s parents, Dr. Ann Sijulin used a vacuum to help the infant through the birth canal. The baby’s shoulder became stuck behind her mother’s pelvic bone, and the doctor pulled down on the baby’s head to get her through, which led to severe nerve damage.

“She panicked and she pulled,” Cullan said. “What you’re never, ever supposed to do is pull downward on the baby’s head. This case shows why. Three nerves were ripped out and two nerves were ruptured in half.”

Sijulin’s attorney, Thomas Shomaker, said he and his client were “saddened by the verdict.”

“We don’t think Dr. Sijulin did anything inappropriate or we wouldn’t have tried the case,” Shomaker said.

Almost all of the money will go directly to Chaylee, with $5,000 each for the two parents.

Cerebral Palsy Sufferer Has New Best Friend

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Eight-year-old Mason Murphy knows better than most the truth in the phrase “man’s best friend” when speaking of dogs. Suffering from cerebral palsy, the Mariemont, Ohio boy relies heavily on his companion dog, Crisp.

Murphy cannot use his legs because of his affliction, requiring help with the most mundane of tasks. Before bed, Crisp helps the boy pull off his socks and his clothes. The dog opens and closes doors, pushes elevator buttons, and helps with Murphy’s physical therapy.

Mason’s mother, Page Murphy, attempted to explain how important the dog was to her son. “Anywhere Mason goes, the dog goes,” she said. “Mason had surgery last week; the dog was in the hospital with him all week. They’re inseparable. They’re best buddies.”

Crisp came from Canine Companions for Independence, a company that breeds companion dogs for people with disabilities. It took over two years of waiting to get a dog that suited the Murphy’s needs.

Canine Companions spends up to $45,000 to raise and train its dogs, but as a nonprofit, it does not charge the families who receive the dogs.

Young Mason said of his new dog, “He’s my friend. I love Crisp.”

Birth Trauma Not Uncommon, Unfortunately

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Having a child born with birth trauma can be terrifying for new parents. What you had dreamed of as a joy-filled moment can become truly upsetting if something goes wrong. As long as the injury is minor, though, a doctor can usually help your child recover.

One of the most common birth injuries is a clavicle fracture. Otherwise known as the collarbone, the clavicle connects the upper part of the breastbone with the shoulder blade. Normally there are no lasting effects from this type of injury. Infants heal quickly, and strapping the arm to the chest should allow the clavicle to heal.

Nerve damage is another type of birth injury. The brachial plexus is a group of nerves that travel from the neck to the arm. When an infant’s head and arm are pulled in different directions, damage can occur to this bundle of nerves. If the damage is minor, it can be left to heal over time. If it is more severe, surgery might be necessary, and the child still may suffer weakness in one arm for life.

Computer Repair Man With Cerebral Palsy

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Technology is allowing more people with disabilities and birth defects to live fuller lives. One sufferer of cerebral palsy, Kevin Berg, has made a career out of technology. From fixing students’ computers in high school, Berg, 37, now has his own computer repair business.

Berg began working with computers when he was 8 years old. He would use them to help him communicate by typing with his nose. In high school, he began to teach himself about the mechanics of computers, fixing them along the way. Later he received a degree in computer science and communication from Seattle Pacific University, going on to work as a programmer until the dot com bubble burst, leaving him laid off and looking for work.

Instead of getting a job, though, Berg started his own computer repair business with the help of his wife. With over 50 regular customers, the business is taking off.

Berg still uses computers to help him communicate, but now it is a tablet and a touch screen PC, combined with a head-wand, allowing him to be so much more efficient. He is happy to show the world what people with disabilities can do.

Cerebral palsy sufferers can lead long, happy lives; however, living with cerebral palsy is a challenge, and giving a child with cerebral palsy the tools he or she needs to live the best life can be expensive.
