The Texas Center for Birth Defects Research and Prevention has lost its federal funding. The center, which focuses its efforts along the U.S.-Mexico border, was one of eight state programs to receive funding from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study. Since its inception, the center has received approximately $10 million in federal funding and published nearly 150 papers.

This national study is overseen by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Representatives for the CDC point to a struggling budget and rising costs for their decision to close three of their eight birth defect research centers. New York and Iowa were eliminated along with Texas, while Arkansas, California, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Utah can continue to receive money.
A loss of this magnitude will put a severe dent into the headway that was being reached by the Texas center. Through the Texas Center for Birth Defects Research and Prevention, scientists from all across the state were able to come together to study risk factors in pregnancy such as diabetes, obesity, folic acid deficiencies, exposure to solvents and mold.
