Confessions of a Pop Performer movie Gettin’ It full movie According to a new study, the use of antibiotics during premature labor may increase an infant’s risk of developing cerebral palsy.

A study from 2001, conduced by researchers from Oxford University, concluded that the antibiotics erythomycin and co-amoxiclav could reduce negative infant outcomes in some cases of premature labor (usually when the mother’s water had already broken). The new study followed up on the children from the original study at the age of seven and examined their rates of cerebral palsy and related problems.

The researchers found no negative effects among children of women who had been given antibiotics after their waters had broken. But among the rest of the children, use of either antibiotic significantly increased the risk of physical or mental impairment, and more than doubled the risk of cerebral palsy.

While only 2 percent of premature infants whose mothers had not been given antibiotics developed cerebral palsy, 5 percent of those whose mothers were given both antibiotics did.

The Reuters news service is reporting that a once-used practice of giving antibiotics to some women at risk of premature birth may have increased the odds their children will develop cerebral palsy and other problems.

The report references a study published in the journal Lancet, which looked at women at risk of premature labor who had no signs of infection. Doctors now recommend antibiotics only for women whose waters have broken prematurely or have an obvious infection.

The findings reaffirm that doctors should not use antibiotics for premature labor when the mother’s water is intact and if there is no infection, said researchers at the University of Leicester who commissioned the study.
